The Good Stuff

The first frost of the season came 2 nights ago, a little signal that things are changing, and this season won't last for long. The colors of autumn are my favorite colors in the whole wide world. Now that I think about it, it's kind of poignant--when I was a kid, my favorite color was green. The color of new growth, the color of spring and summer.

Now that I'm older (a grown-up, I hate to admit), my favorite colors are yellow, orange, and brown. The colors of change. The colors of fall.

I never thought about it until just now, but maybe I like fall so much because it is such a vivid reminder of God's presence. His creative force. His promise of bounty, that He'll keep us safe and snug in the cold weather ahead.

I look at our kids and am reminded to enjoy the NOW.

They spent over 2 hours together on Sunday afternoon, working together and NOT FIGHTING! Mark and I didn't give any instructions...they just found their way out to the pumpkin patch and started harvesting. We planted all kinds of pumpkins, but only about 10 popped up. As you can see, they were overtaken by volunteer gourds of all shapes, sizes, and colors!

I see a parallel here. We have a vision for ourselves of what our life is going to be, the perfect pumpkin you might say...

...but then God adds a little variety, some unexpected events which cause us to reshape our thinking and steer back to living within His will. Some events are smooth and pretty, others are bumpy or downright weird. Some gourds!

And sometimes, God answers our prayers and fulfills our dreams in times/places where we least expect it.

We didn't do anything to deserve it...it's just a gift!

Kenny Chesney goes into a bar, looking for something to make him feel better after a fight with his wife in his song "The Good Stuff". The barkeep says "You're not gonna find that here", pours him a glass of milk, and shares stories of his late wife. The ups and downs of being married to her. "That's the Good Stuff," he says.
The bumps, the clear spots, the rough patches, the colorful times, the not-so-wonderful times...it's all good stuff when shared with our Lord and the family He gave us on this earth to share it with!

Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. --1 Thessalonians 5:21-24

Beautiful post! I think autumn is my favorite season...the winds of change.

Those are lots of pumpkins and gourds! Pretty amazing they harvested them all without arguing! :-)

Yes, Mark and I kept watching and waiting for the arguments...but they were so set on accomplishing their goal. It was neat!
