Re-caps

A few weeks ago the softball and baseball seasons ended (insert Handel's Hallelujah Chorus here). Despite the huge gasoline bill and multiple late-night suppers, I do miss watching Ally and Cy improve on their game. Ally especially loves softball, and it's fun to see how focused she gets. I just wish there weren't so many games, as enthusiasm and attendance wanes (here's the team picture with a handful of kids gone, plus another handful of younger girls brought up to help fill the line-up).

The two games that Ally played her cousin Claire's team were especially fun for us to watch. Here's Ally pitching it in to Claire (and I'm not bragging or anything, especially since Claire is a good athlete and our goddaughter, but Ally did strike her out on this pitch)!

One thing I noticed this summer was that kids like to play unorganized stuff much better than organized team sports. I'm not knocking the structure and life lessons of team sports, but I think it's important to balance it out with some good old-fashioned PLAY. After one of Cy's ballgames, for example, a pick-up game started with a bunch of kids of various ages/sizes/abilities. There were moments of intensity, but for the most part they were just having FUN. Cy was having more fun playing that little pick-up game than on the real field. Maybe it was less pressure? At any rate, here's part of our gang with some of their cousins after that cousin-rivalry ballgame. Just having fun. (And getting orange sand all over every part of their beings, which later made its way onto our floors. Sigh. Did I tell you how much I hate the new sand?)

That same week was also time for Mark's middle and high school football camps. The middle school camp is always a good time. Cy gets to take advantage of his coach's kid status and participate in camp (even though it's technically for kids going into grades 5-8). He could pass for a kid 2 years older than him, anyway.

Coach Siegert and the future Chieftains!!

The official camp team picture. Cy and Mason (another coach's kid) are in the second row, Cy the renegade with the ballcap on; Mason on his left (your right). And on Cy's right (your left, in specs) is the other Cy in town! Mark told the boys that they didn't have to smile for a football picture, and most of the kids really took that to heart. Tough guys.

As I post this, Mark and the high school boys are entering their second week of practice. Ally starts volleyball in two weeks. It doesn't look like fall or feel like fall, but the sports seasons tell me that fall is on its way! I love love LOVE the fall sports. Insert another round of the Messiah!

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.--Revelation 19:6 King James Version

That camp photo with the boys and their ever-so-serious-we-mean-business looks just cracks me up!!!

I am also glad that he organized sports is over for a little bit for us. We enjoyed soccer but I think the play time after the games were more fun for the kids than the actual game.
